The Scope Of Toy-Related Injuries And Fatalities

When you buy a toy for your kid, we know you ensure that it is safe for their age. Like most parents, you probably read the labels thoroughly, making sure to note the possible hazards. However, there are times when a product hits the market that is not safe and can cause serious harm to our children.

We hear about the recalls on toys every now and again on the news, but that does not give us a complete picture of the problem. Today, we want to turn to a report from the Consumer Product Safety Commission so we can better protect ourselves and our families.

At the Simpson Law Group, we want to help you if you or someone you love has been harmed by a faulty product. When you need a San Diego product liability attorney, you can count on us to secure the compensation you deserve.

The Dangers

In 2017, there were an estimated 251,700 toy-related injuries treated in US hospitals. That year, there were 13 toy-related fatalities, with all 13 victims under the age of 12.

When it comes to areas that children are injured, the breakdown is as follows:

  • 44% head and face
  • 22 % arm
  • 17% leg
  • 17% other area

The injury types were:

  • 22% lacerations
  • 17% contusions and abrasions
  • 11% fractures
  • 9% sprains
  • 42% other (internal injury, ingestion, dislocation, concussion, puncture wounds, etc.)

It is absolutely vital that the companies who make children’s toys thoroughly test their products before they are released to the market. These toys should also have instructions for proper use and have all hazards listed so parents understand the risks before letting their children use them.

No parents should have to worry about their children playing with defective toys.

Other Products

Toys are certainly not the only faulty items that reach the market. A quick scan of the government site responsible for tracking recalls shows us that hundreds of products spanning every industry are recalled each year. Whether it is appliances and furniture or medications and foods, we see daily recalls that should be taken seriously. The problems usually revolve around one of three things:

  • Design flaws
  • Manufacturing errors
  • Labeling problems

Regardless of how a defective product causes you or a loved one harm, the company or manufacturer responsible needs to be held accountable.
