There are certain times in our lives where life forces us to pause and breathe in everything that has happened to us. Sometimes those moments are so memorable that people write about them. Some just take in the moment and move one. Others want to share their moment and do something to commemorate everything they overcame. When you are injured because of the negligent behavior of someone else, it is hard not to get angry. If you are the family member of someone who was hurt it is hard not to get angry. When the injury permanently disfigures you, it takes all the courage you can muster to move one and move forward.

Our San Diego Burn Injury Attorneys at Simpson Law Group knows all too well the scars left behind on burn victims. We have had the pleasure of representing some of the kindest and loving people who were scarred emotionally and physically due to the negligence of someone else. Even though we cannot erase what was done to them, we can hold the at-fault party accountable. We can make sure that the financial burden falls on them and not on you.

Types of Burns

Burn injuries do not happen often, but when they do they can be severe. There are four types of burns:

  • First degree: this burn only affects the outer layer of your skin, is mild in pain, and easily treated.
  • Second degree: this burn effects deeper layer of skin, deeper in pain, but still treatable
  • Third degree: this burn effects all layers of skin, extremely painful, can cause scarring, but treatable
  • Fourth degree: this burn effects all layers of skin, reaches your bones or joints,  extremely painful, causes scarring and disfigurement, can cause organ failure, and severe trauma to your body

Burns typically come from fire or heat, but they can also come from chemicals.  Car accidents, house fires, electrical fires, and other scenarios can contribute to how burn injuries happen.

Elizabeth’s story

In 1978, Elizabeth Garcia was 7 years old when her family was traveling back from visiting her aunt who just had a new baby. While waiting at a stop light,  Garcia’s family truck was struck from the rear end by a drunk driver driving 95 MPH. From the impact, the truck flipped over and caught on fire. Elizabeth and her brother were on fire. Her grandmother did not survive. 85% of Elizabeth’s body suffered burns. Firefighters and emergency medics were trying to calm her down, but the odds were not in her favor. However, after 11 months of recovery, Elizabeth beat the odds. 40 years later she is choosing to find the heroes who saved her to help bring closure to her story.
