You probably hear about product recalls on the news all the time, but do you ever put much thought into how a product becomes defective. What if you need a San Diego product liability attorney?
At the Simpson Law Group, we are here if you or a loved one are injured or become ill due to a defective product. We will work to secure the compensation you need. Today, we want to discuss the recall process and how the things you use every day could become faulty.
If we asked you to count the number of products you use each day, you would have trouble. Without even realizing it, we use hundreds, maybe thousands, of separate products each day.
How is that possible?
Your vehicle alone has parts from dozens of manufacturers. To make your cup of coffee, you probably used three or four products. In short, there are plenty of ways that we can become injured or ill due to the items we purchase.
When you hear of a product recall, that means that someone has probably already been injured or even killed due to that product. If you look at the government website that tracks current recalls, you will see that there are hundreds of ongoing recalls in the US right now.
A recent VOX article points out that a recent recall, one for the Fisher-Price Rock n Play baby sleeper, came too late for many. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) began receiving complaints about this product years ago. Only after dozens of infant deaths was a recall issued.
The CPSC is in charge of the recall process and they research hazardous products, study consumer complaints, and enforce safety rules and regulations. They then work with companies to issue recalls when they think it is necessary.
(The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Food and Drug Administration are responsible for vehicle and food recalls, respectively.)
The CPSC says that for a product to be recalled, it must “present a significant risk to consumers.” However, coming to a determination about what ‘significant risk’ means is not easy. In many cases, potentially hazardous products are not recalled because they do not meet that “significant risk” threshold.
This means that you may never know that something you own could cause major injuries to you or your family.
If you or a loved one have been harmed due to the use of a defective product, please consider seeking legal assistance immediately. At the Simpson Law Group, we are going to be by your side.
