We are learning of yet another major poultry recall in the US. On August 22, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said that approximately 135,810 pounds of poultry shilled nationwide, including here in California, are being recalled “because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
All of these products were fully cooked and are being recalled by US Tip Top Poultry, Inc. of Rockmart, Georgia. They were shipped across the country to hotels, restaurants, and institutions, including public schools and hospitals. The Listeria contamination was discovered with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency notified US safety inspectors that a sample of the product tested positive.
This has been labeled as a Class I recall, meaning that those who consume the product have a reasonable probability of adverse health consequences or death. Listeria can cause a serious infection and is a major problem for those with weakened immune systems, older adults, pregnant women, and their newborns.
The US government issues recalls all the time, but many consumers never know about them. Only the major ones make the new – ones that affect large amounts of a product or that have caused someone serious harm. However, even the product recalls that do not make the new should be taken seriously.
When a product is faulty due to a design flaw, a manufacturing error, or a problem with the label, consumers unaware of the defect could be seriously injured or become ill. You should always be aware of current recalls and immediately return or dispose of faulty products. No industry is immune to defective product issues. Whether we are talking about foods and beverages or prescription drugs and automobiles, you need to be aware of potentially harmful products.
