Owning a dog takes great responsibility. It is more than just giving it water and food. Dogs are emotional creatures and deserve to feel love. Unfortunately, for some, that just isn’t the case. For some, a dog means protection like a security guard. It means telling it “good boy” but not showing it any affection. Our San Diego dog bite attorneys at Simpson Law Group has witnessed the destructive nature of dogs. We have seen the bite marks, puncture wounds, lacerations, and trauma of dogs gone wild. From physical to emotional trauma, dogs can cause real damage and their owners should be prepared to pay the price.

Why Dogs Get Aggressive

There are multiple factors as to why a dog acts aggressively. Some factors include the nature of the dog and how they are treated by their owner. There are five common reasons as to why a dog becomes aggressive

  • Illness And Injury
  • Fear
  • Show Of Dominance
  • Possessiveness
  • Frustration

Dogs are like humans, they have defense mechanisms. When dogs are dealing with illness or injury they can’t tell their humans. They have no way of communicating. They follow their owners lead, but not all owners are empathetic. Unfortunately, not all owners care to have an animal that shows love and affection. In fact, some owners purposefully teach dogs to attack.

For example, a 50-year-old and 27-year-old man with a dog was in the middle of a verbal altercation when the young man threatened to release his dog. The older man did not believe the young man and continued the verbal altercation. The young man unleashed the dog and told him to attack. The dog followed the command and jumped on the elderly man. The dog attacked his face and arm leaving bite marks and wounds. When the police arrived they were able to detain the dog, take the 50-year-old man to the hospital, and arrest the dog owner. The elderly man was taken the hospital in unknown condition. The younger man was arrested and could be charged with felony assault. The dog was detained with the San Diego Humane Society.

Dogs are a man’s best friend, but not all humans are a dog’s best friend. Dogs are skilled animals that are sensitive to their surrounding. There are over 2400 dog attacks every day which means that every hour a 100 people are bitten. Most victims are children, but 12 % are adults. Dogs typically attack when people are near their home. In the case of the 50-year-old and the 27-year-old, the dog was fearful that the elderly man may attack his owner.
